I thought I knew what autism was, but after watching some of these videos, I realize that there is a lot more to it, than what I knew. I learned that there are certain extreme environments that can make them anxious or overwhelmed. There’s things that can affect their sense like lights and loud sounds. The ways they interact with us don’t make them less intelligent than the rest of us. I think these things are important to understand because we need to have a controlled environment in order for them to be able to participate and have an enjoyable time like we want. I also learned that there are many people throughout history that have created great things that had autism. They are intelligent and their increased senses can help them discover and create great things. I learned from some of these videos as well as my interactions with people with this condition that they sometimes feel awkward in groups of people and they don’t know how to react to certain situations. This can be important to understand as a TRS because they sometimes may not want to go in large group outings and things like that. I think it is interesting that there are so many different types of autism so I am a little confused on what categorizes someone as autistic. Some seem to have a hard time learning, but then there are others that are geniuses and understand more than I do. I have a roommate that is autistic and I have learned from her that it is important to treat her just like I treat my other roommates. She is just like us, sometimes she may feel awkward in social situations and things like that, but she is equal. There are times she becomes extremely passionate about things, but instead of thinking it’s odd or something, it’s better to embrace it and to talk to her about it. I learned a lot about autism that I didn’t know before.
