What is Autism?
 Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
 ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention, and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.
 Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.

Symptoms:
 Qualitative impairments in communication
 Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction
 Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities
 Prevalence:
 On March 27, 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data on the prevalence of autism in the United States. This surveillance study identified 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) as having autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Prognosis:
 No cure
 Some children “recover” so much that the ASD diagnosis is withdrawn
 For most, the symptoms become milder as the child grows older, but the core problems remain (such as difficulties with social interaction)
 Better prognosis if the child:
 Has an I.Q. >50
 Ability to speak before age 6
 Having a useful skill
 Today’s prognosis is a far improvement over what it was 30 years ago
 Placed in institutions
 It all depends upon the degree of the disorder, and timing and level of treatment
Therapy:
 ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)
 TEACCH
 Floortime/Project P.L.A.Y.
 Relationship Development Intervention
TR Implications:
Get them out of ruts of OCD and other unwanted behaviors by working on:
 Interactive skills

 Daily living skills
 Functional cognitive skills
 Inducing health and wellness
 Reducing self-stimulatory behaviors
 Lifelong process
 Physical, Cognitive, Mental, Spiritual, Social
 Learn skills that cross domains and can be applied to daily life outside of leisure
 Find what they enjoy and make it therapeutic
 Hands on approach
