Personality Disorders
• Individuals who exhibit distorted patterns of relating to, perceiving and thinking about themselves and their environment are described as having personality disorders. The qualifying characteristic of a personality disorder is its chronic, or long-lasting nature, and its pervasive involvement of the total personality. The individual with a personality disorder is not in pain or distressed; the tendency is to view the behavior as healthy, not deviant.
• There are four main types of personality disorders:
1. Paranoid Personality-People are often perceived as odd and eccentric. These individuals are suspicious of almost all situations. They are extremely distrustful and jealous of others, which limits their friendships and seriously affects their emotional and social adjustments, as well as their cognitive processes.
2. Antisocial personality-people are often seen as dramatic, emotional and erratic. A person with this impairment expresses a predatory attitude toward others. In classifying this behavior, the two criteria that must be met are evidence that the behavior has existed since early adolescence and that the deviant attitude affects or permeates the total personality or behavior of the person.
3. Borderline Personality-The individual appears in a constant state of crisis. A person with this impairment is characterized by extraordinarily unstable affect, mood, behavior, object, relations, and self-image; and almost always appear to be in a state of crisis. They have a chronic fear of abandonment and prefer a frantic search for companionship, no matter how unsatisfactory, to dealing with feelings of loneliness, emptiness, and boredom.
4. Passive-aggressive personality-People tend to resist expectations of others while exerting subtle control. They will indirectly resist the demands of others. Such a person would not openly refuse a request to perform a certain task but would procrastinate or make errors in the process of complying with the request, which is a hostile way of controlling others.
