• Introduction:
o Substance related disorders cause more death, disabilities and illness than any other preventable condition
o Alcohol is the most commonly used substance
o Many addictions are associated with mental illnesses
o Children of alcoholics are three times more likely to become alcoholics
• Stages of Addiction:
o Substance Dependence: cognitive, behavioral and physical symptoms from using-decline in daily functioning
o Tolerance: need for a larger dose to get the desired effects
o Withdrawal: unpleasant physiological feelings
o Substance Abuse: failure in role obligations, leads to social and legal problems
o Addiction: continued involvement with substance
• Influence Factors:
o Quantity of dose
o Time it takes for drug to travel through person’s body
o Familial patterns
o Availability of substances
o Enabling system of peers
• 11 Classes of Drugs:
o PCP (angel dust)
Government calls it a hallucinogen, science calls it a dissociative anesthetic
Causes disconnection in body and sensation throughout body

Side effects:
• Numbness, hearing voices, memory loss, extreme violence, brain damage, lack of judgement
o Cocaine:
Side effects:
• Increased energy, feeling of self-worth, confusion, paranoia, violence, suicidal thoughts
o Hallucinogens
People hear, sense or see things that aren’t real
Examples: LSD, mushrooms
Side effects:
• Similar to cocaine
• Loose sense of reality
o Inhalants:
4 kinds:
• Volatile solvents, gases, aerosols, nitrites
Starve body of oxygen
o Marijuana:
Symptoms
• Relaxed, increased enjoyment, more appreciation for world, forgetfulness, munchies, loss of balance, nausea, lack of motivation
o Opioids (morphine, heroine, oxycodone)
Highly addictive
Side effects:
• Anxiety, insomnia, fear, relieve pain
o Sedatives:
Sleeping pills
Prescribed for anxiety
Used to alleviate unwanted side effects of other drugs
Can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts
o Alcohol:
Symptoms:
• Relaxation, loss of inhibitions, lack of concentration, drowsiness, slurred speech, sleep, lack of judgment, lack of motor control

• 150-pound person consumes 2 drinks= legally intoxicated
• Idaho legal limit over age 21= .08% (2 drinks)
Complications:
• Cirrhosis of liver, heart disease, cancer, GI irritation, sexual dysfunction, brain damage
o Caffeine:
Average intake 200 mg/day in America
• 2 cups of coffee
• 4 Cokes
Doesn’t impair functioning
Symptoms:
• Restlessness, nervousness, diuresis
o Nicotine:
Kills more than 5 million/year

• Irritability, anger, anxiety, headaches
